History
Longreach, located 620km west of Rockhampton at the meeting point of the Capricorn and Landsborough Highways, sits in the heart of Queensland’s vast outback. Surrounded by sweeping landscapes and rich pastoral country, the town has long been a centre for the region’s thriving wool and beef industries.
Steeped in Australian frontier history, Longreach is perhaps most famously linked to the legendary bushranger Henry ‘Harry’ Readford, also known as Captain Starlight. In 1870, Readford carried out one of the most daring cattle duffing raids in Australian history, driving over 1,000 stolen cattle across the rugged outback to South Australia. His incredible journey, guided by the stars and knowledge shared by local Indigenous people, cemented his place in outback folklore.
Today, Longreach proudly celebrates its pioneering heritage through iconic attractions such as the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and the Qantas Founders Outback Museum, drawing travellers from across Australia and around the world. Visitors can experience the spirit of the outback through river cruises, stagecoach rides, historic museums, and the vast landscapes that inspired generations of Australian storytellers and bush poets.
In the heart of this historic town sits The Birdcage Hotel, a much-loved local pub that reflects the relaxed charm and genuine hospitality Longreach is known for. A gathering place for locals and travellers alike, the Birdcage offers great food, cold drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere—making it the perfect place to unwind after a day exploring the outback.
